Welcome to Mbhashe Local Municipality, servicing the towns of Willowvale, Dutywa and Elliotdale

Established in terms of the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act, 1998 (Act No. 117 of 1998), as amended, Mbhashe Local Municipality is named after the Mbhashe River, one of the Eastern Cape’s most significant rivers. Situated in the north-eastern part of the Amathole District Municipality, it serves the communities of Dutywa, Willowvale (Gatyana), and Elliotdale (Xhora).

 

The Mbhashe River originates in the Drakensberg Mountains and flows through the municipality before emptying into the Indian Ocean at the Mbhashe Estuary, making it a significant natural and cultural landmark.
